One Night in Bangkok

My first real visit to Asia was intended to be a stopover in Thailand with a friend from Sydney on the way to London. Fortunately or unfortunately that plan went off the rails. Instead of arriving in Heathrow as planned, my entry to Europe was through Russia and came when I crossed through the Ural mountains on a train about 3 months later. Travels through India

A visit to India is an experience that will change your life. A comment that you often hear is that people either love or hate India. For most of my time in the country I have to be honest and say that I was in the later category. The fact that I was sick for most of the time that I was in the country probably didn't help.

General Advice

When you arrive in Asia, you'll quickly work out that you're a long way from home. The rules that you're probably used to often don't apply here. The following pointers should get you started:
  • Zebra crossings are probably there to make it easier for drivers to hit you. Don't expect cars to stop.
  • Beware of strangers. While there are lots of friendly people in all parts of the world and especially Asia, don't expect to find them approaching you at the most famous landmarks, most times these people are trying to sell something or lure you in to some kind of scam
  • Squat toilets are very common in Asia. They usually don't come with toilet paper, and it may not be obvious how they work. Click the link for an intro on how to use a Squat toilet
  • If your planning a long trip, you can make your life much easier by packing properly. Here's my take on what to pack.
