In addition to spending time traveling overseas, I try to see as much of my own country and region as possible. Thousands of travelers have to come a long way to experience a taste of what Australia has to offer, however only a small part of the population gets out an about to see the sights themselves. Australia is a land of amazing contrasts. It has stunning landscapes and unique wildlife. For the unsuspecting it is a harsh and dangerous terrain.

Australia is understandably a popular destination for backpackers. Its considered safe, has a great climate, lots of nice beaches as well as exotic wildlife. For many Europeans, Australia is the first true backpacking experience. Added to all this, its probably the easiest country in the world to spend a year on a working holiday visa. There has always been a rivalry between Australia and New Zealand. We share a lot: a love of traveling, a host of sports that nobody else in the world seems to be any good at such as rugby, Netball and cricket, and more controversially claims to the origin of the band Crowded House. It sometimes seems though when it comes to the movement of people, its all one way traffic with New Zealanders coming to the “mainland” to live. In May 2007 I decided to go the other way as a warm-up to over 12 months of backpacking, spent 5 weeks on the South Island.
